Mokuhanga Residency in Japan

Mokuhanga Residency in Japan

Your opportunity to learn mokuhanga - traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking - in amazing Japan!

Stay and learn, be inspired by the beauty and culture of Japan with access to amazing Tokyo only 1 1/4 hour away. We are based in the picturesque Alpine resort town of Karuizawa.

Our mokuhanga residencies are available from 1 week to almost 3 months and provides one-to-one tuition, a workshop equipped with a wide range of professional Japanese printmaking tools and equipment, and traditional tatami room accommodation.

The residency also provides the opportunity to view traditional and contemporary prints first hand, access a wide range of information and resources relevant to mokuhanga and to interact with a professional artist and teacher with international training, experience and exhibition history. The one-to-one tuition also allows the student to gain skills and knowledge, and to access information and resources not normally available in a workshop setting.

Step through the process of designing, carving and printing woodblock prints using traditional and contemporary techniques of Japanese water-based printmaking. Suitable for beginners through to professional artists, you will be able to produce your own work with assistance and guidance from Terry in all aspects of mokuhanga. Since opening in February 2019, we have had wonderful talented artists from Mexico, Australia, USA, England, France Spain, Italy, France, China, Singapore and Hong Kong.. it's fantastic to meet printmakers from all over the world.

My residency was one of the best decisions I could have made regarding delving deeper into the marvelous world of Japanese woodblock printmaking.
The location of the School couldn't be better, as it's easily reached from Tokyo and is surrounded by the beautiful and quiet town of Karuizawa, which only adds to the creative inspiration and to the whole experience!
The School provides every tool or resource a carver or printmaker could ever need regardless of their level, from first time carvers to seasoned artists or artisans.
All the knowledge I obtained during my one month stay in this School is invaluable! - Camilo Díaz Ocampo (México) 2019

My time at Karuizawa Mokuhanga School was so worthwhile. I learnt so much and had a lot of fun. If you are thinking about learning Mokuhanga, what better place than in Japan in a welcoming and relaxed studio environment.... - Bec Pittman (New Zealand) 2019

My two-week residency exceeded my expectations.  Terry is a very patient, generous and encouraging teacher in the arts of the Japanese woodcut and coupled with the convenience of the studio location and quiet charm of Kuruizawa made the overall experience positively rewarding and worthwhile.
Thank you Terry for being such a great host as well as a teacher! - Siokhoon Pek (Singapore) 2019

 naka karuizawa

The town of Karuizawa at the foot of Asama-yama, in Nagano

What is the best time to stay in Karuizawa? Every season has it's own charms, there is no bad time to be here.

March / April / May

June / July / August

September / October / November

December / January/ February

Cherry Blossoms (late April) leading to fresh green leaves.. still cold in March, but warming up..

May is beautiful, with warm days, cool nights, fresh mountain air and beautiful green everywhere..

Warm, even hot, with the forest and alpine cool that has made Karuizawa a favourite Summer break..

Japan has a 5th season - "Tsuyu" the rainy season, usually two or three weeks at the end of June, but it's a good time for printing!

Gradually getting cooler and even cold by the end of November, with amazing Autumn leaves in October, early November...

"Akebare" means beautiful sunny Autumn day, not a cloud in the sky!

Cold with snow.. crisp air and sunny days, heated rooms and perfect for carving and printing..

Japan's winter is the dry season - not so much rain with cold and sunny days.
